“Alt Girls” is a slang term used to describe girls who belong to the “alt” (short for “alternative”) subculture, which emerged in 2021. The term carries a negative connotation and is often used to mock girls who try to look unconventional and stand out from the crowd.
Alt Girls are characterized by a distinctive style of clothing and appearance. They typically wear oversized dark clothes, such as black t-shirts, wide pants, and chunky boots. Their style borrows elements from various subcultures, including emo, goth, punk, and e-girls. They often dye their hair bright colors and accessorize with chokers, spiked belts, headbands with ears, and lots of rings and chains. Their makeup is also distinctive, featuring dark or vibrant eyeshadow, eyeliner, and sometimes decorative elements on the face, such as hearts or anime-inspired designs.

Psychologically, Alt Girls (altushkas) often seek self-expression, a sense of belonging with like-minded peers, and a way to experiment with their appearance. Their style is a means of standing out, asserting individuality, and carving out a place for themselves in society.
