Changing the clocks is a common practice for most Ukrainians. Although today the topic of switching to summer and winter time often sparks debate the practice itself has a long history. In Ukraine as in many other European countries clock changes were introduced to save electricity and make better use of daylight. To understand when this first happened it is worth looking at the historical context and geopolitical changes that affected Ukrainian territory.
When Was Daylight Saving Time Introduced?
The concept of daylight saving time appeared in the world in the early twentieth century. The idea of seasonal clock changes was proposed by British inventor William Willett but the first countries implemented it during World War I to reduce lighting costs. Later this approach spread to other countries.
In Ukrainian lands daylight saving time did not appear simultaneously across the entire territory because Ukraine was under the control of different states for a long period. At that time regions could follow different rules. However the first systematic introduction of daylight saving time occurred when Ukrainian territories were part of the Soviet Union.
When Was the Clock First Changed?
Official and widespread clock changes in the territory of modern Ukraine first took place on April 1 1981. That was when the USSR decided on an annual switch to daylight saving time in spring and return to standard time in autumn. This step was part of a broader Soviet reform aimed at reducing electricity consumption under economic pressure.
Before this individual instances of clock changes may have occurred in different regions earlier during war or under other authorities but 1981 was the first year when the procedure was clearly regulated and mandatory for everyone.
What Year Did They Start Changing the Clocks?
The first official year when clock changes became a nationwide norm in Ukraine was 1981. From that year the USSR implemented unified rules for switching to summer and winter time. Since then time changes in Ukraine have occurred regularly twice a year.
After gaining independence Ukraine continued using this system. Several times at the state level the possibility of abandoning seasonal clock changes was considered but each time the decision was either postponed or canceled.
Present Day
Today Ukraine continues to change clocks twice a year like most European Union countries. The switch to daylight saving time traditionally occurs on the last Sunday of March and the return to standard time on the last Sunday of October. Reasons for maintaining the practice include synchronization with European partners stable transportation schedules and established international rules.
Despite ongoing discussions about the benefits or drawbacks of changing clocks Ukraine still follows the standards used in the EU. Thus the first official clock change in Ukraine took place in 1981 and the practice continues to this day.
